American Beautyberry

American Beautyberry is a deciduous shrub native to forest edges, moist slopes, bluff tops, woodland openings, swamp margins, and fence rows. During late spring and early summer, it produces clusters of small flowers along its stems. From August through October, purplish to bluish berries develop and encircle the stems, often lasting into early winter. These fruits serve as an excellent food source for songbirds and small mammals. Additionally, when the leaves are crushed, they release a chemical that can repel mosquitoes, ticks, and fire ants.
