Slugs & Snails

Slugs and snails thrive in moist environments and are commonly found hiding under pots, among plant leaves, and in mulch. During the day, they avoid the sun's heat and come out at night or on cloudy days to search for a variety of plants, fruits, and vegetables to eat.

To determine if you have a slug or snail problem, look for the silvery mucus trails they leave behind on the plants. Another effective method is to place a lid filled with beer in your garden at night, making sure it is level with the mulch, as they are attracted to the beer. In the morning, check the lid for any unwanted visitors.

There are several organic methods to manage slugs and snails:

1. Keep your garden weeded.

2. Eliminate hiding spots, such as woodpiles.

3. Water your plants in the morning instead of at night.

4. Use slug and snail bait or diatomaceous earth.

5. Attract beneficial predators like toads, turtles, birds, snakes, ground beetles, and firefly larvae.

6. Place small strips of copper around flower pots or raised beds as barriers.

By following these tips, you can help control the slug and snail population in your garden effectively.
