Three Sisters

Three Sisters

Companion planting has been practiced for centuries by Native American Indians. When the Pilgrims came over on the Mayflower, the Native Americans taught them about the "Three Sisters," which were essential for their survival in the New World.

The Three Sisters consist of the following plants:

- Corn (Carbohydrates): Provides support for the beans.

- Pole Beans (Protein): Enrich the soil with nitrogen for the following year.

- Squash or Pumpkins (High in Vitamins): Act as a living mulch, keeping the soil cool and moist while preventing weeds.

Together, these three plants create a nearly perfect meal packed with essential vitamins and minerals. There are several methods to plant the Three Sisters. One effective approach is as follows:

1. Amend your soil in the first year.

2. Create a circular mound for the corn and beans, making it 12 inches high and 4 feet across. Be sure to flatten the top of the mound so it is even.

3. Plant the corn in the middle of the mound, with pole beans surrounding it.

4. Once the corn reaches 4 to 6 inches in height, plant the pole bean seeds.

5. After the pole beans have sprouted, plant your squash around the perimeter of the circle.
